A ‘good fit’ matters.

I provide clinical supervision to those seeking licensure in Virginia and Washington D.C.

My focus is on teaching and mentoring pre-licensed clinicians on trauma informed, culturally responsive practices throughout the lifespan of the therapeutic process.

I primarily work with adults, those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and people of color.

I strive to practice from an integrative approach using a multicultural, social justice, and intersectional framework when conceptualizing client cases.

As a trauma informed and EMDR trained therapist, I also focus on using somatic interventions and mindfulness to balance my foundational background in psychodynamic and existential-humantistic theories.

Should you choose to work with me, I will directly issues related to transference, counter-transference, implicit biases, and model how to enhance your therapeutic work with other interventions.

I believe this process isn’t only about caring for your clients—it’s caring for you, as you develop into a professional therapist.

How to get started

  • Fill out the contact form or email me directly.

  • Once you reach out, I will respond with options to schedule a free 15-20 minute initial consultation via Zoom to determine if we would be compatible for the type of supervision experience you are looking for. I will ask you about your goals for supervision, get a sense of what client populations and presenting issues you commonly work with, and what you are looking for in a supervisor.

  • If we determine we are a good fit, I will guide us through the state licensure paperwork process and provide a Clinical Supervision Agreement (CSA) via DocuSign. The CSA will outline expectations for each of us.

If we are not a good fit, I am happy to offer referrals for other clinical supervisions who may be better suited to help with what you are looking for!

  • Once on boarding and documentation is complete, we will start the process of meeting for supervision! I will be responsible for providing you with a Zoom link for our meetings. Our communication will primarily take place via email.

FAQs about Clinical Supervision

If I am seeking supervision in VA as a Resident, can I receive supervision from another supervisor who is licensed out of state?

“Supervision completed in another jurisdiction can possibly count toward licensure if it meets the requirements outlined in Virginia’s Regulations. The board will not review this supervision until you have completed your supervised experience, pass the NCMHCE examination and apply for LPC licensure by examination. You must have your past supervisor(s) complete Virginia’s Verification of Supervision form. You should keep this information until you are ready to apply for LPC licensure by examination. Additionally, you will be required to submit your supervisor’s license verification in order to verify that they meet the supervisor requirements.” (p. 10, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)

What responsibilities and paperwork are required of a clinical supervisor for VA?

The supervisor of a resident assumes full responsibility for the clinical activities of that resident specified within the supervisory contract for the duration of the residency. The supervisor shall complete quarterly evaluation forms to be given to the resident at the end of each 3-month period. These evaluation forms are available on the Board website. It is advisable that both the supervisor and the resident keep copies of these evaluations.

Additionally, on the verification of supervision form, the supervisor must report the total hours of residency and must evaluate the resident’s competency in the six required competency areas.

The resident should hold the quarterly evaluations and verification of supervision forms until the resident completes the residency requirements, passes the NCMHCE exam and applies for LPC licensure by examination. Supervision by any individual whose relationship to the resident compromises the objectivity of the supervisor is prohibited.

If supervision terminates, the supervisor or the resident should complete the Termination of Supervision form (available on the Board website) and retain a copy of the form in their records in case of an audit or complaint.

What are the examination requirements for receiving my LPC in VA?

To become licensed as an LPC by the Board you must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counselors Examination (NCMHCE), unless you are applying for licensure by endorsement.

You must pass the NCMHCE examination within six (6) years from the date of initial issuance of the resident license. A licensed resident can take the examination at any point during the residency without Board pre-approval. An extension request after the six (6) year time period will not be considered (p. 10, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)

*If you graduate from a CACREP-accredited program, your program will most likely assist you in enrolling for the exam prior to graduating.

What is a Clinical Supervisory Contract?

The VA Board of Counseling defines a supervisory contract is an agreement that outlines the expectations and responsibilities of the supervisor and resident in accordance with regulations of the board.

This is an example of a clinical supervision contract you will sign if we were to work together. It is based off the sample that the VA Board of Counseling recommends. This will be provided to both residents (seeking licensure in VA) and LGPCs (seeking licensure in DC).

How do we meet for supervision?

We will primarily meet via Zoom. However, if you are local to Washington D.C. there can be opportunities to meet in person at my office. I will provide you with the Zoom link for our meetings.

What minimum documentation do you require to begin clinical supervision?

-Cover letter (optional, but encouraged)
-Updated Resume or CV
-Proof of active Professional Liability Insurance
-For Virginia: Completed licensure residency paperwork, now available online under the category: “Temporary License as a Resident in Counseling”

How many supervision hours are required for my LPC in VA?

“A minimum of 200 hours of supervisory sessions, occurring at a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 4 hours of supervision per 40 hours of work experience, during the period of the residency. Up to 20 hours of the supervision received during the supervised internship may be counted toward the 200 hours of in-person supervision if the supervision was provided by a LPC.” (p. 9, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)

How do we schedule supervision?

Either I or my Administrative Assistant will coordinate with you via email at the beginning of each week with 2-3 options for scheduling.

I do not provide standing appointments in which we meet the same time each week. I do not do this for my clinical/client work either. Therefore, if you are looking for that specific consistency, I will not be able to provide this for you.

What are the regulations around group supervision?

“Group supervision hours are equivalent to individual supervision hours, however, only half of the 200 required hours may be obtained in group supervision. 100 hours of the 200 required hours must be obtained under board-approved supervision with a Licensed Professional Counselor.

What is group supervision? The Board’s definition means the process of clinical supervision of no more than six persons in a group setting provided by a qualified supervisor.” (p. 9, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)

Am I allowed to count supervision hours while I am waiting for my residency to be approved?

No. Supervision that is not concurrent with a residency will not be accepted, nor will residency hours be accrued in the absence of approved supervision. Once you receive your resident license, you must post a copy of their license in a conspicuous place as stated in section § 54.1-3506.1 of the Code of Virginia.

What if I currently have a supervisor and want to switch to Dr. Band? Do I need to fill out more paperwork for the VA Board?

As of 12/23/2019, the regulations states to change or add a supervisor or worksite, a resident will no longer be required to submit an application, pay a fee or notify the Board in order to add/change a supervisor or worksite. However, a resident must have a signed and established supervisory contract for each supervisor and worksite prior to providing clinical counseling services and before counting hours toward licensure.

A copy each supervisory contract is to be retained by the resident and supervisor. The Board does not need a copy of your contract. Additionally, it is the resident’s responsibility to ensure that the supervisor is qualified to supervise your residency.

See document for 2019 changes for residents.

What other fees should I keep in mind, aside from your supervision rate?

You can expect to pay for the following:

1) Your licensure paperwork application processing fee. Estimated $65.00 (p.6 , LPC Licensure Handbook)

2) Your professional liability insurance fee. (Varies based on provider). For reference, I use CPH & Associates. Another common coverage option is HPSO. What happens if we are unable to meet for supervision that week and rescheduling isn’t an option?

1) If we are unable to meet for a full 1 hour—we can meet for an abbreviated time on the phone or via Zoom for a quick check in.

2) You can email me using an encrypted email service to provide a run down of your caseload or questions; in which I will respond within 24 hrs.

3) If there are no issues or you were on vacation and did not meet clients—then we schedule time to meet next week.

Pricing & Supervision Formats

Individual

You are looking for individualized time and attention in focusing on advancing your skill set as a clinician. The most flexible option in regards to scheduling as you are not negotiating time with other supervisees.

This experience is 1 hour per week unless otherwise agreed upon between myself, the supervisor, and supervisee.

$70/hr per supervisee

Other

There may come a time, most likely due to scheduling conflicts/travel, that we are unable to meet for a full hour. However, you would still like to check in for a brief rundown of your case load or ask specific questions about your process. In these cases, we can call on the phone as supplemental support for that specific week or you can send an email using an encrypted platform with your questions too.

$30/15 minutes

Triadic

Triadic is sometimes referred to as didactic supervision. In this case, my humanist philosophy would have me include myself as a third person within the relationship, hence why I have intentionally chosen triadic as the term for this type of supervision. In this experience there are a total of 3 professionals: myself and 2 supervisees.

Triadic supervision is 1 hour per week, unless otherwise agreed upon between myself, the supervisor, and supervisees. This gives each supervisee the opportunity to review 1-2 cases while providing feedback to each other as well as receiving feedback from myself.

You are wanting to share your supervision time with one other supervisee. In this way, you will receive another perspective to help you develop into a licensed counselor.

$55/hr per supervisee

Group

You are looking for a cost effective way to receive quality supervision. You are open to sharing your time and learning from other perspectives. This approach will provide the most exposure to diversity and range of client cases and skill sets.

This option is the most scheduling restrictive. We will do our best accommodate everyone’s schedule; however, supervision will be set on the same time and day every week.

Each group contains a maximum of 6 supervisees.

$45/hr per supervisee
