Training
Dr. Band provides mentorship and training through culturally responsive supervision to pre-licensed professionals in D.C. and Virginia
A ‘good fit’ matters.
I provide clinical supervision to those seeking licensure in Virginia and Washington D.C.
My focus is on teaching and mentoring pre-licensed clinicians on trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices throughout the lifespan of the therapeutic process.
I primarily work with adults, those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and people of color.
I strive to practice from an integrative approach using a multicultural, social justice, and intersectional framework when conceptualizing client cases.
As a trauma-informed and EMDR-trained therapist, I also focus on using somatic interventions and mindfulness to balance my foundational background in psychodynamic and existential-humanistic theories.
Should you choose to work with me, I will directly teach issues related to transference, counter-transference, implicit biases, and model how to enhance your therapeutic work with other interventions.
I believe this process isn’t only about caring for your clients—it’s caring for you, as you develop into a professional therapist.
How to get started
-
Fill out the contact form or email me directly.
-
Once you reach out, I will respond with options to schedule a free 15-20 minute initial consultation via Zoom to determine if we would be compatible for the type of supervision experience you are looking for. I will ask you about your goals for supervision, get a sense of what client populations and presenting issues you commonly work with, and what you are looking for in a supervisor.
-
If we determine we are a good fit, I will guide us through the state licensure paperwork process and provide a Clinical Supervision Agreement (CSA) via DocuSign. The CSA will outline expectations for each of us.
If we are not a good fit, I am happy to offer referrals for other clinical supervisions who may be better suited to help with what you are looking for!
-
Once on boarding and documentation is complete, we will start the process of meeting for supervision! I will be responsible for providing you with a Zoom link for our meetings. Our communication will primarily take place via email.
FAQs about Clinical Supervision
-
“Supervision completed in another jurisdiction can possibly count toward licensure if it meets the requirements outlined in Virginia’s Regulations. The board will not review this supervision until you have completed your supervised experience, pass the NCMHCE examination and apply for LPC licensure by examination. You must have your past supervisor(s) complete Virginia’s Verification of Supervision form. You should keep this information until you are ready to apply for LPC licensure by examination. Additionally, you will be required to submit your supervisor’s license verification in order to verify that they meet the supervisor requirements.” (p. 10, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)
-
To become licensed as an LPC by the Board you must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counselors Examination (NCMHCE), unless you are applying for licensure by endorsement.
You must pass the NCMHCE examination within six (6) years from the date of initial issuance of the resident license. A licensed resident can take the examination at any point during the residency without Board pre-approval. An extension request after the six (6) year time period will not be considered (p. 10, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)
*If you graduate from a CACREP-accredited program, your program will most likely assist you in enrolling for the exam prior to graduating.

The supervisor of a resident assumes full responsibility for the clinical activities of that resident specified within the supervisory contract for the duration of the residency. The supervisor shall complete quarterly evaluation forms to be given to the resident at the end of each 3-month period. These evaluation forms are available on the Board website. It is advisable that both the supervisor and the resident keep copies of these evaluations.
Additionally, on the verification of supervision form, the supervisor must report the total hours of residency and must evaluate the resident’s competency in the six required competency areas.
The resident should hold the quarterly evaluations and verification of supervision forms until the resident completes the residency requirements, passes the NCMHCE exam and applies for LPC licensure by examination. Supervision by any individual whose relationship to the resident compromises the objectivity of the supervisor is prohibited.
If supervision terminates, the supervisor or the resident should complete the Termination of Supervision form (available on the Board website) and retain a copy of the form in their records in case of an audit or complaint.
-
The VA Board of Counseling defines a supervisory contract is an agreement that outlines the expectations and responsibilities of the supervisor and resident in accordance with regulations of the board.
This is an example of a clinical supervision contract you will sign if we were to work together. It is based off the sample that the VA Board of Counseling recommends. This will be provided to both residents (seeking licensure in VA) and LGPCs (seeking licensure in DC).
-
“A minimum of 200 hours of supervisory sessions, occurring at a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 4 hours of supervision per 40 hours of work experience, during the period of the residency. Up to 20 hours of the supervision received during the supervised internship may be counted toward the 200 hours of in-person supervision if the supervision was provided by a LPC.” (p. 9, LPC Licensure Process Handbook)

We will primarily meet via Zoom. However, if you are local to Washington D.C. there can be opportunities to meet in person at my office. I will provide you with the Zoom link for our meetings.

Either I or my Administrative Assistant will coordinate with you via email at the beginning of each week with 2-3 options for scheduling.
I do not provide standing appointments in which we meet the same time each week. I do not do this for my clinical/client work either. Therefore, if you are looking for that specific consistency, I will not be able to provide this for you.
